East and Mount Elgon

Extinct volcano of 4,321 metres, Sipi Falls at 1,750 m, Bugisu arabica plantations and Bagisu territory, far from classic safari circuits.

Eastern Uganda is organized around an extinct volcano, Mount Elgon, whose Wagagai peak rises to 4,321 metres on the Kenyan border. The massif, older than Kilimanjaro, has been eroded into gentle slopes covered in afro-montane forests, heather moorlands and giant groundsels above 3,500 metres. From our agency in Kampala, we propose this region as a refreshing retreat: you leave the heat of Lake Victoria for temperatures ranging from 15 to 24 degrees during the day, sometimes 5 degrees at night at altitude.

The park's gateway is Mbale, a trading town of 100,000 people at the foot of the volcano, approximately 4 hours by road from Kampala via Jinja. From Mbale, you reach the villages of Budadiri or Bulambuli in one hour, the starting points for trails to the crater, or Sipi, perched at 1,750 metres on the western foothills. Sipi is our most-used base: three successive waterfalls cascade into an open valley, the main falls plunge from a 99-metre cliff, and the climate remains temperate year-round.

The region is the territory of the Bagisu, sometimes called Bamasaba, who have cultivated the volcano's slopes for centuries. Their economy rests on Bugisu arabica coffee, recognized for its acidity and red fruit notes, sold to specialized roasters in Europe and America. We work with several cooperatives around Sipi and Bukalasi that open their drying sheds and small pulping units to visitors: the visit lasts 2 to 3 hours and concludes with a coffee tasting prepared using traditional methods, roasted over wood fire.

The Bagisu are also known for imbalu, a male circumcision rite marking the passage to adulthood. Ceremonies are held in even-numbered years between August and December, primarily in villages around Mbale and Bududa. These are community events spanning several days, with dances, drums and processions. If your trip falls during this period, we can organize respectful participation via local clan chiefs, but this requires advance planning and does not suit casual tourism.

Beyond Mount Elgon, eastern Uganda also includes the Jinja region, on the banks of the Victoria Nile, 80 km east of Kampala. This is where the river officially exits Lake Victoria, and the town has become a centre for whitewater rafting on Class IV and V rapids downstream of the Bujagali dam. The terraced cultivated landscapes of Kapchorwa, on the volcano's northern flank towards the Kenyan border, are among the country's most photogenic: maize, plantain bananas, coffee and tea plants are tiered up to 2,500 metres.

Together, they form a vibrant agricultural region, seldom visited by classic safari circuits, suited to travellers interested in hiking, coffee and direct contact with rural populations. It is also a practical logistical hub before or after Kidepo, in the northeast, towards which the road passes through Soroti and Moroto.

To discover

Wagagai crater trek. Ascent of 4 to 6 days from Budadiri to the summit crater of 40 km diameter, at 4,321 metres. Nights under canvas, crossing zones of giant groundsels, rare encounters with other groups.

The three Sipi Falls. Half-day hike connecting the three cascades tiered between 1,500 and 1,775 metres, including the main 99-metre fall. Clear views over the Karamoja plains in good weather.

Bugisu arabica coffee cooperatives. Visit to a family plantation and washing unit around Sipi or Bukalasi, with tasting of coffee roasted over wood fire. Main harvests from October to February.

Imbalu ceremonies among the Bagisu. Male circumcision rites celebrated in even-numbered years between August and December in villages around Mbale and Bududa. Drums, dances and processions over several days.

Agricultural terraces of Kapchorwa. Ridge road at 2,000 metres crossing tiered crops of coffee, maize and banana plants, with views of the rift escarpment to the east.

When to go

Eastern Uganda experiences two useful dry seasons for visiting: December to February, and June to August. These are the best windows for treks on Mount Elgon, when red earth trails are not transformed into slippery mud. Temperatures at Sipi (1,750 m) then range between 12 degrees at night and 24 degrees during the day. At Wagagai crater, expect 0 to 5 degrees at night, sometimes frost in the early morning.

The long rains from March to May make the volcano ascent technically feasible but hardly enjoyable: reduced visibility, waterlogged trails, increased risk of landslides on the Bududa slopes. The short rains of October and November are more bearable, with showers concentrated in late afternoon. For travellers combining Elgon with an imbalu ceremony, the August to December window in even-numbered years partly overlaps with the short rains, which we account for when organizing transfers.

Practical advice

For Sipi Falls and surroundings, allow 2 to 3 days on site: one for the falls, one for coffee, one for Kapchorwa villages. The crater trek requires 5 to 7 days total, including transfers from Kampala. The region is reached exclusively by road from Entebbe or Kampala, approximately 6 to 7 hours to Sipi via Jinja and Mbale, on well-maintained tarmac.

The most logical combination is with North and Kidepo: the track heading towards Moroto then Kaabong departs from Mbale and allows you to continue without returning to Kampala, saving 2 days. Also combinable with Murchison and Nile for travellers wishing to add classic safari. Comfort is rustic but adequate: mid-range lodges at Sipi with hot water and solar electricity, canvas bivouacs on the crater trek with porters and cook provided. The region is particularly suited to hikers, coffee enthusiasts and travellers who have already made a first trip to East Africa and are seeking less-travelled terrain.
