Everything you need to know about Uganda

Our local experts share their knowledge to prepare your trip.

When to visit Uganda?

Uganda can be visited year-round, but two periods stand out clearly. From June to September, then from December to February, the tracks are passable, the forests less slippery, and gorilla trekking in Bwindi is considerably more comfortable. It's also the best time to observe wildlife in Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls parks, when animals concentrate around water sources. The rainy seasons, in April-May and November, transform the country into a striking palette of greens: the light is superb, visitor numbers lower, and it's often during these periods that you'll best enjoy Lake Bunyonyi or the Rwenzori Mountains. Ultimately, it depends on the experience you're seeking.

What budget should you plan for a trip to Uganda?

A trip to Uganda requires a more substantial budget than one might imagine, mainly due to tracking permits: $800 USD for mountain gorillas at Bwindi, $300 USD for chimpanzees in Kibale. These government fees are fixed. Excluding permits, you should budget an average of €250 to €400 per day per person for a comfortable circuit, including 4x4 vehicle, English-speaking driver-guide, well-appointed lodges and park entries. Travelers who opt for basic camps and long overland journeys can reduce costs; those who add internal flights to Bwindi or Kidepo will increase them. Over ten to twelve days, a coherent itinerary typically starts around €3,500 per person, international flights not included.

Why organize your trip with a local agency in Uganda?

Working with a local agency based in Entebbe fundamentally changes the nature of your trip. Mapendano Voyages has been operating on Uganda's trails since 2000, with an English-speaking team — Charles on the ground, Ange and Paula on the planning side — who knows each lodge intimately, the rangers of Bwindi, the trackers of Queen Elizabeth, the real rhythms of safari days. This proximity allows us to adjust an itinerary the day before for the next day, to secure a gorilla permit at just the right time, to choose the tracking sector that matches your fitness level. Our regional footprint, spanning Kigali, Entebbe and Goma, also opens the door to Uganda-Rwanda or Uganda-Virunga combinations built by a single team.

What to see on a tour in Uganda?

The country is generally explored in a loop, starting from Entebbe and Lake Victoria. Most itineraries include Murchison Falls, where the Nile carves a spectacular passage between two rocky cliffs, then Kibale Forest and its chimpanzees, before descending to Queen Elizabeth National Park, with its tree-climbing lions of Ishasha and the Kazinga Channel. The highlight remains Bwindi, a high-altitude primary forest where you can trek on foot to encounter mountain gorillas after several hours of hiking. Depending on available time, you can extend to Lake Bunyonyi to relax, to the Rwenzori for experienced hikers, or further north to Kidepo, a remote valley on the South Sudan border, still little visited.
