Historic lodge on the shores of Lake Bunyonyi, in southwestern Uganda: rooms with balconies, canoeing, ornithology and cultural encounters.

Birdnest Resort occupies a wooded promontory on the shores of Lake Bunyonyi, in southwestern Uganda. The establishment, one of the oldest on the lake, combines a singular family history with an offering oriented toward nature: birdwatching, canoe rides and encounters with local communities.

Why stay at Birdnest Resort

The lodge stands out for its historical roots. This is where tourism on Lake Bunyonyi was born, in a former family home transformed by its use. Today, the property features around fifteen rooms spread across several buildings, with direct lake access, outdoor pool and a wide range of supervised activities.

The setting — verdant hills, calm waters, abundant birdlife — is particularly suited to travelers seeking a peaceful base between stages of a southwestern circuit itinerary (Bwindi National Park, Mgahinga Volcanoes Park, Rwandan border).

An extraordinary Ugandan story

The adventure began in the 1960s. Frank Kalemera Kalimuzo, then head of the Ugandan civil service, fell under the spell of Lake Bunyonyi and decided to build his home there. Around 1963, he constructed the first building to house his wife and seven children. Travelers passing through soon asked to stay: the family home became a hotel, and tourism on the lake took off.

The arrival of Idi Amin in power abruptly interrupted the story. Suspected of involvement in a coup attempt, Frank Kalimuzo was arrested; the regime's soldiers occupied and vandalized the hotel, which fell into ruin.

Under the presidency of Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, a group of Belgian investors tracked down widow Kalimuzo and negotiated takeover of the site. Rebuilt and expanded, Birdnest grew from a four-room lodge into a property with around fifteen rooms, continuing today the founder's original vision.

Atmosphere

The ambiance remains that of an enlarged home rather than a hotel complex. Wood dominates — floors, furnishings, balconies — and spaces are human-scaled. In the morning, birdsong replaces the alarm; in the evening, the terrace facing the lake becomes a gathering point before dinner.

Rooms

Rooms feature wooden floors and all open onto a balcony overlooking the lake and hills. Each unit includes a private bathroom, safe and sitting area. The most spacious can be arranged as a honeymoon suite upon request, with dinner served on the terrace above the water.

Services and activities

The lodge has an outdoor pool, a lake-facing terrace and a billiards table. The team organizes on-site or through local providers:

  • canoe outings on Lake Bunyonyi;
  • motorboat excursions to the lake's islands;
  • forest walks around the lodge;
  • cultural encounters with the Batwa community, the region's indigenous people;
  • visits to Bukona village, renowned for its blacksmiths;
  • birdwatching excursions, as the lake is home to a wide variety of species.

Location and access

Birdnest Resort is located in southwestern Uganda, near the borders of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Tanzania. It is reached via a branch of the main Kabale-Kisoro road: coming from Kampala, the entrance is on the left, just after leaving Kabale; from Kisoro, on the right, just before entering Kabale. Allow approximately 7 to 8 hours drive from Kampala, or a domestic flight to Kihihi followed by a transfer.

Nearby

The lodge makes a natural stop on the southwestern parks itinerary. For gorilla trekking or rainforest, visitors typically continue to Kibale Forest Camp. For savanna and game viewing, Kidepo Savannah Lodge and Amuka Lodge open onto the more arid northern landscapes. For a beach stay on Lake Victoria to end your trip, 2 Friends Beach Hotel in Entebbe offers a convenient base before your return flight.
