Safari tent camp on the southern edge of Kibale National Park, an ideal base for chimpanzee tracking and primate watching in the forest.

Kibale forest camp is a safari tent camp located outside the southern section of Kibale National Park, bordering the Magombe Swamp. Its position—roughly ten minutes by road from the Kanyanchu visitor center, the starting point for chimpanzee tracking trails—makes it a logical base for those keen to observe the primates of this lush tropical forest in western Ouganda.

Why choose Kibale forest camp

The property ticks all the boxes for a wildlife-focused stay: immediate proximity to the chimpanzee trail, complete immersion in a forest environment rich in birds and primates, and sufficient canvas comfort for a two to three-night stay. Black-and-white colobus monkeys regularly pass through the canopy above the camp, and birdlife can be observed from the tent verandas. It's a coherent hub for travelers wanting to combine chimpanzee tracking, a walk through Bigodi Wetland, and excursions to nearby crater lakes.

Atmosphere

The camp embraces understated elegance: no obtrusive permanent structures, tents spaced throughout the woodland, and a soundtrack entirely provided by the forest. Sound carries far—colobus calls at dawn, bird songs throughout the morning, a hushed ambiance as night falls. The adjoining garden serves as a transition zone between the tents and restaurant, frequented by butterflies and a few species of curious small primates.

The tents

Accommodation is divided into two categories:

  • 12 safari tents with flushing toilets, dressing area, hot water shower and private veranda opening onto the surrounding vegetation.
  • 9 self-catering tents with thatched roofs, equipped with beds, bedside tables and power outlets. Shared facilities.

This dual offering adapts to different budgets, from the comfort-seeking traveler to those prioritizing immersive experience.

Dining and services

A small on-site restaurant serves international cuisine tailored to typical traveler preferences. The garden remains accessible throughout the day for breaks between activities. Activity organization (rangers, transfers) is handled directly from the camp.

Location and access

The camp sits just off the main Fort Portal–Kamwenge road. The second sign after the Bigodi village marks a dirt track of roughly one kilometer leading to the entrance. Budget half a day's travel from Entebbe or Kampala to reach the Kibale region, typically combined with other stops in western Ouganda.

Activities from the camp

  • Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale National Park, accompanied by a forest ranger (permits must be booked in advance).
  • Birdwatching at Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, guided walk through the neighboring swamp.
  • Exploration of crater lakes in the Ndali-Kasenda region.
  • Night walks by torchlight to spot galagos and nocturnal primates.
  • Visit to a tea plantation, a major feature of the local landscape.
  • Meeting the Batoro village and hiking to the Mahoma waterfalls.

When to visit

Dry seasons (December to February and June to September) offer the best conditions for chimpanzee tracking: less muddy trails, more active and locatable primates. Wet seasons remain feasible and quieter in terms of crowds, but require waterproof gear.

Worth combining with

Kibale fits naturally into a western Ouganda circuit. To extend your journey, you can head to the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth Park for its tree-climbing lions, or venture further to Bwindi for mountain gorilla tracking.
