Still relatively undiscovered by tourists, Uganda nevertheless harbors an incredible variety of landscapes. And the word incredible seems inadequate when faced with the wealth of wild treasures found there. It is no wonder that this East African country is the dream destination for every naturalist. To give you an idea of what awaits you on a trip to Uganda, we've compiled a list of the most beautiful national parks to explore. And we promise you one thing: you'll be absolutely blown away !

1. Murchison Falls National Park

  Uganda's Most Beautiful National Parks

We begin with Uganda's largest protected area: Murchison Falls National Park. Located in the northern part of the Albertine Rift Valley, this park is renowned for its impressive waterfalls. But it's also one of the finest destinations for a safari in Uganda. And for good reason—you'll find all the iconic animals of the African bush here !

In addition to a 4x4 safari during which you can observe elephants, buffalo, ibises, warthogs, lions and much more, you can also embark on a boat excursion. Traveling along the White Nile to the famous Murchison Falls, a cruise is an opportunity to spot hippopotamuses, crocodiles, and observe a great variety of bird species.

2. Queen Elizabeth National Park

  Uganda's Most Beautiful National Parks

Head east to discover Queen Elizabeth National Park, whose landscape beauty revolves around extinct volcanoes, crater lakes, marshes and grasslands. Surrounded by lakes Edward and George, the park provides habitat for countless bird species (over 500 species have been recorded here), making it Africa's second-most important ornithological park.

Beyond a boat excursion to discover the avifauna, don't miss the remote Ishasha sector, best explored during a Jeep safari. This southern section of the park is the playground of tree-climbing lions. Indeed, you can observe arboreal lions perched in the branches of large fig and sycamore trees. Overall, the park is home to 90 mammal species, including a large population of hippopotamuses, leopards, elephants, primates, Uganda kobs, hyenas and more.

3. Bwindi National Park

  Uganda's Most Beautiful National Parks

In the southwestern part of the country, head to Bwindi National Park, widely celebrated for its numerous primate colonies and one of Africa's richest ecosystems. Visitors come here particularly to observe the last remaining mountain gorillas. The park alone holds half of the world's mountain gorilla population. To encounter them, you can choose from four trekking sectors: Nkuringo, Buhoma, Rushaga, and Ruhija.

Beyond gorillas, Bwindi National Park holds numerous records in terms of faunal and floral wealth. For example, the park contains 84% of all forest butterfly species in Uganda's mountain forests and harbors the greatest diversity of tree and fern species in East Africa.

4. Kibale National Park

  Uganda's Most Beautiful National Parks

After encountering the mountain gorillas, set out to meet chimpanzees in Kibale National Park ! Adjacent to Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kibale has been designated a protected forest reserve and is the ideal location for a chimpanzee safari. With an experienced forest guide, you'll track our closest cousins—an encounter that will stay with you forever.

Boasting the greatest diversity and population of primates in East Africa, besides chimpanzees you may encounter other monkey species such as Hoest's monkey, grey-cheeked mangabey, blue monkey, black and white colobus, red colobus, olive baboon and more. You'll also find elephants, buffalo, hippopotamuses, warthogs, and over 350 bird species !

5. Lake Mburo National Park

  Uganda's Most Beautiful National Parks

Continue with Lake Mburo National Park, located near the capital, Kampala. Despite its modest size, this park offers impressive landscape diversity, blending open savannas, dry hills, lakes and marshes, rivers and wetlands, acacia forests and more. It's a refuge for numerous animals. And since the park has very few predators, it can be explored on safari on foot, by bike, or even on horseback !

You can observe zebras, buffalo, impalas, and many birds, as well as species found nowhere else in Uganda such as impalas, rock hyraxes, and red mongooses. It's also possible to take a cruise on Lake Mburo where you can see hippopotamuses, crocodiles, and water birds.

Other Must-See Uganda Parks

This list of Uganda's most beautiful national parks is not exhaustive, given the country's wealth of exceptional natural sites. Beyond these 5 examples, we can add other parks that truly merit a visit. Among them are:

  • Mgahinga Gorilla National Park: considered the country's most picturesque reserve, this park, together with Bwindi, forms one of the last refuges of the planet's remaining mountain gorillas.

  • Kidepo National Park: the most remote of all Uganda's parks. It's therefore ideal for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path wildlife safari. It's particularly renowned for its birdlife, with up to 479 bird species, 60 of which are endemic !

  • Mount Elgon National Park: Mount Elgon is a very old, extinct Ugandan volcano, and at 4,321 m altitude, it ranks as Africa's 8th highest peak. In addition to numerous animals you can observe, there are many hiking trails as well as Dirigsana Falls and Gabushana Cave.

  • Semuliki National Park: while home to many wild animal species, this park is chiefly renowned for its hot springs called Sempaya Springs. But be warned—these aren't springs for bathing, as water temperatures reach around 100°C !
