Ugandans are predominantly Christian. Many practice Catholicism, others are Anglican, and a small minority are Muslim. Yet Ouganda is among the countries registered in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

The country upholds its people's right to freedom of belief, so religions must be officially declared with the Ugandan government. As a result, dominant religions hold the status of "trust" (a foundation), while others exist as Non-Governmental Organisations.

Religious Distribution in Ouganda

Since Christians and Muslims comprise the vast majority of Ugandans, the distribution divides into two distinct groups. Christians are concentrated in the Nile-Western sub-region. Muslims, by contrast, populate the Iganga district. Consequently, Christian and Muslim celebrations hold a place in Ouganda's calendar.

Public holidays throughout the year include:

  • Christmas Day (December 25)
  • St. Stephen's Day or Boxing Day (December 26)
  • In memory of Archbishop Janani Luwum (February 16)
  • Easter observances: Good Friday, Easter Sunday, and Easter Monday
  • Eid al-Fitr
  • Eid al-Kabir
  • Eid al-Adha

Religions in Ouganda

Traditional Religions

Ugandans' ancestors practised their own faith. While deeply rooted in African culture, only 1% of today's population continues to live by these ancestral beliefs.

Christianity

A majority of Uganda's population worship Jesus Christ. Whether Catholic or Anglican, Christians live their faith daily. This also includes "Baptism," an evangelical Christian movement.

Islam

Muslim Ugandans are also among the country's believers. Though their numbers are growing, they have not yet surpassed the predominance of Christians.

Hinduism

Uganda's population has Indian roots. Thus, a Hindu community persists, ranking third after Christianity and Islam.
