Uganda is located at the heart of four major African lakes that comprise the 'Great Lakes Region of Africa'. Lake Edward, Lake Victoria, and Lake Albert surround the country and serve as natural borders. Within its 236,040 km², approximately 44,000 consist of Ugandan lakes and waterways.

Overview

Uganda sits squarely on the African plateau. As such, it has no coastal borders. However, it does boast several high peaks, including Margherita Peak or Ruwenzori, which reaches 5,110 meters in altitude.

  • Continent: Africa
  • Region: Great Lakes Region of Africa
  • Total Area: 236,040 km²
  • Water Surface Area: 44,000 km² (Land area comprises 84.61% and water surface 15.39%)
  • Total Borders: 2,698 km, including the Democratic Republic of Congo (765 km), Kenya (933 km), Rwanda (169 km), South Sudan (435 km), and Tanzania (396 km).

The lowest point in Uganda is Lake Albert, at an elevation of 621 meters. Furthermore, the Nile, known locally as the 'White Nile', is the longest watercourse flowing through the country, while Lake Victoria is the largest body of water.

Ugandan Terrain

The Ugandan plateau averages approximately 1,100 meters in elevation, with mountain ranges encircling it (Ruwenzori Peak, Mount Elgon, Mount Moroto, Mount Kadam, and Mount Morungole). Its flat-topped hills and valleys enable Ugandans to engage in rich agricultural pursuits.

What makes Ugandan terrain distinctive is the convergence of East African savanna with Central African jungle. These two contrasting landscapes harmonize to create a genuine marvel that defines Uganda's remarkable beauty.

Uganda: The Verdant Nation

The fertile nature of Uganda's land fosters the flourishing of its flora, not to mention its water zones (lakes, waterways, wetlands). The landscape is characterized by tropical plants and brushy savannas.
