Tented camp 500 m from Kalokudo Gate, on the edge of Kidepo Valley National Park. Karamojong architectural inspiration and views over Narus Valley.

Kidepo Savannah Lodge is a tented camp located 33 km on the edge of Kidepo Valley National Park, in the far northeastern corner of Uganda. Just 500 metres from Kalokudo Gate, it serves as a base for exploring one of the country's most remote parks, with views over Narus Valley, Mount Morongule, and the ridges marking the South Sudan border.

Why stay at Kidepo Savannah Lodge

The lodge's appeal begins with its location. Kidepo Valley remains one of the least visited protected areas in East Africa: the savanna here is expansive, wildlife herds are abundant, and the sense of isolation is genuine. The camp complements this landscape without compromising it: lightweight structures, elevated deck walkways designed to preserve sightlines, and an architectural approach inspired by Karamojong manyattas, the traditional dwellings of the people who inhabit this region.

This is a destination for travelers willing to accept some logistical roughness—the access is lengthy—in exchange for a rare setting and wildlife viewing without the crowds.

Atmosphere and Karamojong heritage

The lodge's identity draws from Karamojong culture, a pastoral community of northeastern Uganda. The colours of the tent coverings, the patterns, and the arrangement of communal spaces echo the circular manyattas and their textiles. The effect is understated, free from heavy-handed folklore: you sense genuine connection to the territory rather than thematic decoration.

The thatched-roof restaurant and adjoining bar terrace form the heart of communal life. Dinner is served facing the savanna, and deliberately muted lighting lets the night sky reclaim its majesty once darkness falls.

Accommodation

The lodge offers two categories of tents:

  • 12 safari tents on elevated decks, with private en-suite bathrooms (hot shower, flush toilet) and verandas overlooking the savanna.
  • 9 simpler tents without private facilities, outfitted with Masai blankets on beds and an electrical outlet for device charging. Bathroom facilities are shared.

This choice lets you tailor your stay to budget and comfort preferences, while dining and activity services remain consistent.

Services and activities

The lodge arranges classic safari drives in 4x4 vehicles through Narus Valley, where lions, elephants, buffalo, and antelope concentrate. For variety, hikes in the Lamoj Mountains, a few kilometres from the park headquarters, offer a different perspective on the landscape. Guided bush walks and encounters with neighbouring Karamojong communities round out the programme.

Services include restaurant, bar, parking, and coordination with park rangers for excursions.

How to get there

By road: from Kampala, the most direct route goes via Gulu and Kitgum, then reaches Lokumoit Gate. Allow a full day's driving, with the final section on rough track. It's wise to plan an overnight stop en route.

By air: charter flights serve Kidepo airstrip. Transfer from the landing strip to the lodge is arranged on request. This is the fastest option to maximise safari time.

Other accommodation in Uganda

If you're building a complete itinerary, several properties are worth combining with Kidepo. Kaabong Resort Hotel offers a useful stopover on the northern route. For Kibale Forest and its chimpanzees, Kibale Forest Camp is a popular base. For gorillas, Gorilla Safari Lodge and Bwindi Lodge cover Bwindi National Park, while Ishasha Wilderness Camp provides access to the southern sector of Queen Elizabeth, renowned for its tree-climbing lions.

Planning your journey

Kidepo Savannah Lodge fits naturally into an extended safari circuit that justifies the logistical effort required to reach northeastern Uganda. To craft a tailored itinerary combining Kidepo with the country's other parks, consult our Uganda safaris.
