8-banda lodge on the edge of Bwindi Park, near Buhoma gate. Direct base for gorilla trekking in southwestern Uganda.

Bwindi Lodge sits in Kanungu, directly adjoining Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, close to the Buhoma gate. A small stream separates the property from the primary forest, and gorillas occasionally cross it to venture near the bandas. This location makes it one of the most direct starting points for gorilla trekking in southwestern Uganda.

Why choose this lodge

Bwindi is one of the last two worldwide refuges for the mountain gorilla, a species whose population now stands at over a thousand individuals and is slowly growing. The lodge was designed to minimise the distance between accommodation and the trekking assembly point, avoiding long early-morning drives on rough tracks. Its limited capacity of eight bandas maintains an intimate atmosphere, in contrast to the larger structures that have grown up around the park.

Atmosphere

The lodge stretches across the slopes of a verdant valley, facing the dense canopy of Bwindi and, on clear days, the silhouette of the distant Virunga volcanoes. The wooden buildings and local materials blend seamlessly into the vegetation. In the evening, the fireside bar becomes a gathering point after hours spent in the forest, fostering a quiet ambience conducive to conversations among returning trekkers.

The bandas

The lodge has eight bandas, each with a private veranda overlooking the forest and, depending on orientation, the volcanoes. The bathroom features a hot shower and flush toilets. Each cabin is assigned a butler who accompanies guests throughout their stay: preparing the fire, room service, organising trekking departures. This service model remains rare in the region and is one of the lodge's defining features.

Services and dining

The communal banda houses the restaurant, fireside bar and Wi-Fi access. The cuisine draws on local produce, with a menu suited to late returns from trekking. An on-site spa is available—invaluable after a day of walking across rugged terrain, as gorilla trekking can last several hours through dense vegetation. The adjacent craft centre sells locally-grown organic coffee, sold directly from producers.

Location and access

The lodge is situated near Buhoma gate, at the park's northern entrance. Access is typically from Kampala or Entebbe by road (allow a full day's travel), or via a domestic flight to Kihihi airstrip followed by a road transfer. The lodge arranges transfers from major arrival points. The dry season (June–September, December–February) remains the most comfortable period for trekking, as forest tracks become slippery during the rainy season.

Activities from the lodge

Gorilla trekking is the main activity, undertaken on a named permit issued by park authorities. Beyond this, the lodge facilitates visits to the Batwa village, the pygmy people historically connected to Bwindi forest before the park's creation, as well as exploration of the local craft centre, surrounding tea plantations and waterfalls accessible on foot with a guide.
