Amuka Lodge
Amuka Lodge
Bush lodge near Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, a stopover between Kampala, Murchison Falls and Kidepo Valley.
Amuka Lodge sits in close proximity to the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, north of Kampala. The lodge serves as a base for visitors keen on observing white rhinoceros, in a bush zone traversed by diverse wildlife.
Why stay at Amuka Lodge
Three main reasons justify a stopover here. First, access to Uganda's sole site where you can observe the white rhinoceros on foot. Second, its geographic position: the lodge sits midway between Kampala and Murchison Falls National Park, and also makes a logical halt en route to Kidepo Valley. Third, the architecture of the main pavilion, crafted almost entirely by hand with mahogany beams salvaged from an abandoned sawmill in the Budongo Forest dating back several decades.
Atmosphere and architecture
The central pavilion houses the restaurant, bar, walkways and terrace. The reclaimed materials lend the place an unpretentious, rustic character: weathered beams, dark mahogany wood, openings onto the surrounding bush. A swimming pool carved into the rock extends the communal area. The atmosphere remains understated, without excess, oriented toward calm observation of the landscape and wildlife that sometimes ventures to the camp's edge.
The chalets
The lodge comprises 10 chalets distributed across 4 family units and 6 standard rooms. Construction combines hardwood and stone. Each chalet features a private veranda equipped with safari chairs, facing the vegetation. Décor remains simple and functional, in the spirit of African bush camps.
Dining and services
The on-site restaurant offers «safari» cuisine, tailored to the rhythm of activities: early departures, light lunches, heartier dinners. Ugandan coffee is served at breakfast, accompanied by fresh fruit juices. The main pavilion also doubles as a bar and common lounge.
Activities from the lodge
Rhino trekking
Ziwa Sanctuary is Uganda's sole site where white rhinoceros roam freely. Trekking is done on foot, accompanied by rangers, over distances that vary depending on animal location.
Canoe safari in Lugogo Wetlands
About ten kilometers away, the Lugogo wetlands allow you to approach the shoebill by canoe, an endangered bird species. The outing also provides access to the white-crested turaco, giant kingfisher, and several species of woodpeckers and barbets.
Guided walks
Escorted walks within the sanctuary allow you to encounter the Ugandan kob, bushbuck, oribi, grey duiker, black-and-white colobus monkey, as well as warthogs and waterbucks.
Night walk
By torchlight, the evening excursion targets elusive species: leopard, aardvark, genet, porcupine. Sightings depend heavily on conditions and luck.
Location
The lodge sits approximately 3 km from Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary and about ten kilometers from the center of Nakitoma. Allow roughly three hours' drive from Kampala. Its position makes it a strategic stopover for linking Kampala to Murchison Falls or Kidepo Valley.
